The House Ways and Means Committee approved a sweeping deficit-cutting package led by President Clinton's plan. It includes a broad energy tax, higher taxes on high earners, increased Social Security taxation, and rising rates for many corporations. The measure targets deficits and awaits full House and Senate action.
All the Hornets have to show for their Big Apple efforts is a 2-0 deficit in the second round. Charlotte center Alonzo Mourning says, Now we’ve got to take care of business at home. Game 3 tonight at the Charlotte Coliseum at 8 p.m. TNT and WJZY will televise.
The Outlaws motorcycle gang rode through Gaston in the 1970s warring over turf and drugs leaving a notorious name. Many fled or were jailed, some turned to preaching, while others keep ties to bikes. FBI agent Lance Emory infiltrated the group as authorities say the club faded from public menace but threads remain.
An FBI undercover operation in Charlotte used Lance Emory posing as Alan Price to infiltrate the Outlaws after the 1979 July 4 massacre. Over two years he built trust, wired homes, and spied on leaders, leading to a 1982 raid that jailed Flamont and 15 others while Emory later returned to the office as a supervising agent.
Defense Secretary Les Aspin announced the Clinton administration would press ahead with anti missile work but abandon the centerpiece of Reagan era space weapons. The Strategic Defense Initiative, known as Star Wars, had peaked in 1992 and faced cuts as the Soviet threat faded. Aspin framed the move as a transition to smaller scale research while seeking 3.8 billion dollars for anti missile programs in 1994.
