Local Rotary clubs in Gaston County sponsored a scholarship contest at the Schiele Museum in Gastonia on Sunday April 28. Eleven finalists gave essays as speeches and four students earned scholarships totaling 5250 dollars.
Jim Hartman, 48, Army explosives disposal veteran, runs Secret Garden Bees on a 23 acre Linden farm with 30 hives housing about 600,000 bees. He started the venture after service and now tends the bees with his wife, coffee, and Maverick the dog by his side.
Holden Clark, a 35 year old Gaston County family law attorney, was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to fill the vacancy created by Judge John Greenlee. He will take the bench May 15 and previously spent years as a public defender and private practitioner. Clark credits early courtroom exposure with shaping his career and believes in treating all clients with humanity, recognizing crime as sometimes a symptom of larger issues.
