A month after Jo and Don Boyles moved to clear land for a $23 million Gastonia airport project, the 738 acre site near Pasour Mountain is slated for death by the newly elected city council. Families relocated to make room for the project now face loss as the plan nears for abandonment. Mrs. expresses disappointment.
A 7.4 magnitude quake centered east of Los Angeles rattled the region, followed by a 6.5 aftershock near Big Bear Lake. One child killed and more than 150 injured as highways buckled, a bowling alley collapsed, and power outages spread. Seismologists noted the unusual double quake sequence and possible larger aftershocks.
