North Carolina Bar Association elects first Black president
In Asheville, the North Carolina Bar Association chose Raleigh attorney Charles L. Becton as its first Black president elect, to take the post in June 2008. Becton, a Duke Law School graduate who served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, will lead a year as president and chair the finance committee. Janet Ward Black of Greensboro was sworn in as the 114th president. Black highlighted civil legal services via the 4ALL program.
