Voting rights questions linger over Gaston Section 5 status

Gaston County Elections Director Sandra Goepfert outlined how voting changes over the past decade focused on polling place adjustments and precinct line reviews after the 2000 census. The county submitted changes to the federal Voting Section for review, a process that can involve requests for minority resident names. The section has never denied changes in her term, and leaving the Section 5 list is not a stated goal. Grant noted Gaston’s record appears solid, citing early African American leadership and countywide election milestones.
