State superintendent warns SC bus fleet faces cash crash
South Carolina Education Department faces a looming March deadline as funds for repairing and fueling the 5000 bus fleet run dry. Inez Tenenbaum says the legislature failed to provide new money or a replacement program, with fuel costs rising and buses aging beyond safe use. The department once relied on year-end leftovers but a budget order drained those funds. Some oldest buses may be cannibalized for parts while efforts to boost mechanic pay and seek lottery-backed funding continue amid district shortages.
