On the Road manuscript to be restored at Indiana University
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay bought Jack Kerouac's original On the Road manuscript for 2.43 million and will have preservationists at Indiana University restore the frayed 50-year-old scroll. Kerouac wrote it in 1951 over three weeks on taped papers forming a 120 foot roll. The edges have deteriorated from time dog damage. Published in 1957 the novel is a keystone Beat work detailing a Bohemian odyssey across America. Irsay recalls reading it as a teen and says renegade artists drew inspiration from the book.
