Budget nears Cooper desk after more votes
North Carolina lawmakers pushed a 23.9 billion dollar two year budget toward Gov Roy Cooper after party line votes in the House and Senate. The House 72 45 approved amid heated debate about secrecy and lack of amendments while the Senate 36 14 backed the deal with minimal discussion. Republicans defended the process as political theater by Democrats ahead of fall elections.

North Carolina Senate approves charter schools outside Charlotte
The Senate gave tentative approval to a measure letting Matthews Mint Hill Huntersville and Cornelius form municipal charter schools funded by government but governed independently. Critics warn of duplicative taxes and racial and geographic divides, while supporters frame it as a pilot to ease suburban school crowding. The bill awaits final Senate action next week and would return to the House if passed.

Inmate Woods Dies After Escape Crash Near I 85 Exit 14
An inmate, active since a 1995 hammering death conviction in Harnett County, died at the crash scene near Jenkins Road toward Bessemer City after an escape from the Dallas prison. A note and his mother's funeral program found in his boot indicated he did not plan to live. He suffered broken jaw, rib injuries, and head trauma after the overturned truck collision during a work detail in Lowell. City officials said protocols were followed. Woods had been relocated to minimum security in September and was one of three inmates to escape since 2016.
