Details emerge from deadly crash in Highland neighborhood
Witnesses dispute official account of a Sunday pursuit by Gaston County deputies that ended with a fatal crash and serious injuries. Joshua Soule, 41, faces second degree murder charges after a high speed chase near Rankin Avenue and Highland Street. Antrel Garrigan, 29, of Decatur, Georgia, died at CareMont. Shawn Smith, 47, was hospitalized in stable condition. The Highway Patrol says Garrigan and Smith were struck by Soule’s vehicle after he fled an attempted traffic stop. Eyewitnesses claim the pursuing Sheriff’s Office car struck the pedestrians. Public anger over police conduct grew at a Monday press gathering.
