Gastonia church to host first Make 'm Smile in state
First Assembly of God in Gastonia will host Make 'm Smile on August 24 at Rotary Centennial Pavilion. The event, launched by Nathaniel's Hope in Orlando, celebrates children with special needs with therapist representation, character visits, bounce houses, and free access for families. Volunteers and Smile Makers are sought via Nathaniel's Hope.

Tropical Storm Beryl Aims at Texas Coast
Strengthening Beryl moved toward the Texas coast on Sunday as forecasters warned it could re strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane and strike early Monday. The National Hurricane Center cautioned possible Category 2 landfall and Weather.com noted heavy rain and strong winds would begin in South Texas ahead of landfall, with a tornado threat in outer bands. Gaston County deputy Maxwell dies on duty after medical emergency
Gaston County Sheriff's Office deputy Phillip Maxwell died unexpectedly Thursday morning while on duty at the detention center. Maxwell served four years in the U S Army and nine years in the Army reserves before joining the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, totaling about 20 years in service. Board of Commissioners Chairman Chad Brown issued a press release expressing deep sadness and prayers for Maxwell's family and colleagues.

Man sent back to prison for touching child
Billy Moore aged 62 was returned to prison after a December release for a 1986 first degree sex offense and assault with a deadly weapon. He moved to Kings Mountain registered as a sex offender, then touched a 6 year old girl while on parole, prompting reinstatement of his life sentence.
