Paratrooper remembers D-Day sacrifice during anniversary jump
Gaston County native Jim Phillips led 18 crew members as they jumped from a WWII era plane near the French coast on June 5 2019 one day before the 75th anniversary. About 5 000 participants wore historically accurate paratrooper uniforms honoring fallen soldiers and the weight of their sacrifice drew veterans back each year. Phillips grew up in Gastonia and now lives in Forsyth County Georgia. See D DAY A3.

Meet the man behind the fireworks in Kings Mountain and Shelby
Scott Neisler, longtime Kings Mountain mayor, helps light up area skies with major Fourth of July displays. He estimates show profits from 900 to 20,000 dollars and has grown the event into a choreographed musical spectacle. Neisler recalls digging mortars early on and evolving to lead planning, radio work, and music for multiple shows annually.

Fireworks laws differ as South Carolina draws customers north
In Blacksburg South Carolina Shelton Fireworks markets the world’s largest fireworks warehouse. Jeffery Jones says 60 to 70 percent of customers come from North Carolina and typical spend is 80 to 100 dollars.
