St Michael Catholic School in Gastonia begins major upgrades to its Gastonia campus, announcing facility improvements, new classroom space, and enhanced student amenities to modernize campus infrastructure. Key improvements include enhanced classrooms, safety upgrades, and expanded student services.
Thousands are expected for Gastonias annual Independence Day celebration downtown around the Rotary Centennial Pavilion starting at 5 PM. Eleven food trucks will offer meals and an outdoor beer garden will provide drinks with no admission fee. A kids zone includes inflatables rides a rock climbing wall and face painters. The band Night Years performs 6 to 9 PM and a fireworks show at 9:30 PM with patriotic music.
Gastonia will host a $30,000 Fourth of July event in the late afternoon and evening with food trucks a beer garden and kids activities, avoiding an all‑day downtown festival. Local business owners like Dickson Shreffler argue downtown remains underutilized and would benefit from longer hours.
State investigators identified Bernard Dale Hunt, 41, as the inmate who died Sunday at Gaston County Jail. He had been booked June 22 on resisting a public officer. SBI is handling the in custody death inquiry, with no details released yet. Hunt had prior convictions for domestic violence, threats and DW I.
