Supreme Court upholds murder conviction in UNC Charlotte case
State Supreme Court denies appeal in the 2008 death of Irina Yarmolenko. Mark Bradley Carver was convicted by a Gaston County jury of first degree murder in 2011 and sentenced to life. Attorney Gordon Widenhouse urged overturning the conviction, but the court found no error.

Icy conditions trigger dozens of crashes in Gaston County
Weather mix of snow sleet and freezing rain caused roughly three dozen wrecks on Friday with fender benders along icy roads in Gaston County. East Franklin Boulevard before Franklin Square shopping center iced over, many cars sliding into ditches and medians. From 6 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. 39 traffic wrecks were reported by Gaston County Police. Roadways could stay rough with a high near freezing.

Belmont to honor Reid School educators with service
The Eta Mu Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc will recognize Reid School Principal Henry Sherwood Blue and Assistant Principal Thomas E. Grier at 11 a.m. Sunday at Love's Chapel Presbyterian Church Belmont. A Concert of Diversity follows at 3 p.m. at the same church. The two men, who co founded the chapter in December 1959, were killed in a January 1960 car crash while attending an education conference. They mentored Black students during segregation era and are remembered for community impact at Reid School in Belmont and surrounding towns.
