Gaston County welcomes first 2013 baby Zygavian Stokes
Ebony Moore of Kings Mountain joyfully announces the birth of her son Zygavian Stokes at Gaston Memorial Hospital on January 1 at 12 14 PM weighing five pounds thirteen ounces and measuring eighteen inches. He is the county’s first baby of 2013 and the family says he is healthy and a New Year surprise.

Belmont Sgt fires during struggle wounds officer and woman
Belmont police say a sergeant's 9 mm submachine gun discharged during a New Year’s Eve struggle at 3260 Lake Pointe Drive in Reflection Pointe. Officer Randy Berry and Melissa Verner were hit by shrapnel in the leg, both treated at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Berry released, Verner stable. Sergeant Brad Pickett is on leave as investigations proceed.
