Gaston County faces a heavy 2016 murder docket with 17 inmates charged with first degree murder and fewer than 10 defense attorneys assigned. DA Locke Bell cites limited counsel, high case work hours, and a statewide lab backlog as factors slowing trial schedules despite a January completion of a high profile case.
The 2016 murder rampage case ended with life without parole for Zinna after a trial that began about a year after the event. A separate trial in April will test Darren Adams's claim of innocence in the August 2015 fatal shooting at Gaston Inn, while officials praise swift dispositions in Gaston County.
CareMont Health released its 2015 compensation data showing CEO Doug Luckett as the highest earner with a base salary of 604,074 and total compensation above 1.03 million after incentives and benefits. Board member Donnie Loftis defends the pay as necessary to attract top leadership for premium care in Gaston County.
