The Gaston public school board approved the 2017-18 and 2018-19 calendars after a three month committee review with 29 members and input from about 2000 survey responses. Key changes include added paid teacher workdays and district wide parent teacher conference days in fall and spring. Standoff suspect Smeltzer dies after police entry
Gaston County Police identified 49 year old Richard Grant Smeltzer as the man who shot himself during a Tuesday standoff at a Scott Drive residence while officers served warrants for alleged sex offenses.
