Michael Barrett profiles Mildred Sadler and her son Ed Sadler, pivotal figures in Gaston County public education from teaching to administration. Mildred guided the district through integration while Ed raised standards and student performance, cementing a multi-decade leadership legacy through 2006.
Mildred Sadler, a 90 year old from Clover, South Carolina, rose from cotton farm roots to become a respected educator and administrator in Gaston County. She taught home economics in York, worked as a dietician, and advanced to instructor and assistant principal at Highland Junior High. As desegregation began, she led the local teachers association and in 1975 became the first black woman to serve as a Gaston County administrator.
Ed Sadler recalls his mother stressing literacy from childhood with home libraries. She later taught and advised as he began teaching in 1968 and became Gaston County Schools superintendent in 1995. Both earned master’s degrees in education around the same time, highlighting mentorship and community impact.
Gaston County commissioners and CaroMont Health will formalize a renewed lease for CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia with a signing ceremony on March 12. After more than a decade of wrangling, the deal ends disputes over the current contract, aims to strengthen county finances, and secures CaroMont’s long term independence as a nonprofit health system.
The deal extends 40 years to 2055 and requires CaroMont to pay Gaston County 20 million on March 12. It plans 200 million in campus building investments over the next decade and to hire local contractors whenever possible. The agreement also dedicates 450000 annually for community health promotion and active lifestyle development in Gaston County.
