Great Backyard Bird Count marks 20th anniversary nationwide
The Great Backyard Bird Count celebrates its 20th anniversary inviting birders worldwide to count birds for at least 15 minutes over four days. In North Carolina, citizen scientists contributed 5 521 checklists documenting 200 species last year with coast counts highlighting Snow Geese and Ring-billed Gulls amid unusual sightings possible this year due to extreme weather. The Gaston County Public Schools board will decide Monday whether to approve the district calendars for the next two years. A 29 member committee drafted the plans after four meetings and an online survey with over 2,000 responses guided revisions.

Violent Crime Up in Gaston County in 2016

Gaston man handed two life terms for two fatal DWIs
Eric Wilson Taylor, 49, was convicted of driving left of center and charged with second degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle, DWI and violent habitual felon after a Mount Holly crash on February 5 2015 that killed 61 year old Vance Avery. Prosecutors noted a prior 1997 DWI murder conviction and said Taylor was addicted to Xanax and cocaine at the time. He was on probation for card fraud when the fatal crash occurred and has now been sentenced to two life terms with bond revoked.
