Icy conditions caused 18 wrecks on state roads in Gaston County from Monday to Tuesday afternoon. Most crashes happened Monday as sleet and freezing rain blanketed the area, according to Lt. Jeff Gordon of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. See WRECKS Page 3A.
A sharp cold front is forecast to push through the region with single digit lows, potentially setting record lows overnight Wednesday into Thursday. Meteorologist Harry Gerapetrits of the National Weather Service warns of icy conditions and dangerous commutes as Gaston County braces for extreme temperatures.
Police say Darrell Wayne Rivers helped his brother Peter Rivers flee after the Mount Holly killings of Bridget Berry and her son T J Berry Bridget Berry was killed on Feb 5 four days before the body was found and Peter Rivers was charged with first degree murder He is being held for transport back to Gaston County as weather permits and Darrell faces a felony count for accessory after the murder
A Gastonia Police officer shot and killed Betty Diane Sexton 43 after responding to a domestic disturbance near Union Road and East Hudson Boulevard. The SBI will investigate and findings will be given to District Attorney Locke Bell. Officer LaDoniqua Neely is on administrative leave. she joined the force in 2012. Sexton’s family describes her as generous and helpful.
