Salt Before The Storm Hits Gaston Roads
Gaston County DOT crews pretreated roads with brine ahead of potential bad winter weather. Salt trucks activated Sunday and again Monday at 7 a.m. They will continue spraying brine and then apply salt as flurries begin. In prior snow events about 300 tons of salt were used. this week’s total depends on conditions.

Snow safety in numbers shows crews begin preparations two days in advance. N C DOT targets de icing on I 85 and U S Highways 321,29,74 and N C Highways 273,275,274,27 with 12 to 14 hour truck shifts. De-icing fleet consists of two tandems and one tanker. tandems carry 500 to 500 gallons and a tanker 5,000 gallons.
