A three judge panel led by Gaston County Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell blocked a GOP pushed law that required Senate confirmation for the governor's Cabinet. The decision, backed by two other judges, drew sharp criticism from House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger who accused the panel of overstepping authority. The panel will decide whether to extend the order as hearings proceed in Raleigh.
Michael Patrick Ryan, a death row inmate, receives a new trial after a judge overturns his 2010 conviction for the Mount Holly killing of 65 year old David Farrar. Co defendant Wesley Adair pled guilty and testified. Prosecutors say Farrar was robbed of collectibles and cash to buy crack cocaine. The defense argues Farrar associates framed Ryan.
Investigators say the third blaze may be unrelated as Gastonia police link three arson fires to a 24 hour span. One man, Tony Franks of Murrells Inlet, S C, is jailed on a $125000 bond after being charged with second degree arson for a Milton Avenue home owned by his father. Fire damage from the fires at Milton Avenue and two others is listed at $20000 and $40000 with no reported injuries. Authorities caution the Wednesday fire nearby could be connected but are unsure of a common motive or accelerant.
