Crowders Mountain State Park draws crowds as warm weather and a park named 2014 state park of the year boost attendance. The North Carolina Division of Parks reports a 10 percent rise statewide, with crowds often filling lots enough to close the gate on busy weekends. Park Superintendent Larry Hyde notes lines stretching to the main road and potential weekend crowding.
Crowders Mountain will conduct prescribed burns from February 16 to March 31 affecting up to 300 acres. Portions of the park including the campground trails and visitor facilities west of Pinnacle Road will close, while the Linville access area remains unaffected. For details call 704-853-5375.
Gaston public schools mostly earned C and D marks in the first state release of School Performance Grades for 2013 14. Highland School of Technology was the lone A, five elementary schools failed, and Superintendent Jeff Booker said the scores do not reflect classroom learning and that a single day snapshot cannot judge school quality.
East Gaston residents express doubt over the new state grading system. Joshua Sawyer, whose children attend an elementary school, says the grade is unfairly low and that strong home and classroom environments matter more than test scores. Lauren Jones, whose daughter is at Robinson Elementary with a C, calls the metric vague and notes good teachers and a solid principal. Gazette readers at Gastonia stores doubt the grades reflect school success.
