Crowders Mountain sees sharp climb in park visitors
Attendance at Crowders Mountain State Park near Gastonia rose to more than 797000 in 2016, an 18 percent increase from 2015, with spokesman Charlie Peek noting it more than doubled since 2011. Across North Carolina State Parks a record 18.8 million visitors were recorded in 2016. William B. Umstead led with 1.84 million visitors, a 38 percent rise from 2015, while Pilot Mountain also saw gains.

Epidemic drug classes aim to close jail revolving door
Gaston County Jail sees most inmates misusing drugs. Doug Lance of Cornerstone Christian Center cites 2012 data showing 86 percent or more inmates are there for drug related reasons. Cornerstone has run substance abuse classes for over a decade with 12 to 14 week programs though access and completion vary. About 50 dollars covers graduation costs per participant.

Gaston public schools rank among the state's safest large districts for 2015 16 with the lowest crime rate among the 10 largest districts.
