Mount Holly Mayor Brian Hough warns 405 workers at the Freightliner truck plant will lose jobs in coming months, signaling ripple effects across educators, workforce officials, staffing firms, and the Gaston County community as nearby Gastonia cuts 80 positions at its parts plant.
Daimler Trucks North America plans temporary layoffs at Mount Holly and Gastonia Freightliner facilities starting in April. Mount Holly will shed 405 jobs, reducing staff to about 1,200, while Gastonia will lay off 80 workers, also leaving about 1,200.
A historical glance shows Freightliner in Mount Holly and Gastonia cutting hundreds of jobs across years. Key dates include 825 layoffs in August 2000, 478 in April 2007, 260 in January 2007, and 39 in October 2008 plus 500 in Mount Holly, with multiple recalls from 2010 to 2011. By 2013 Daimler Trucks North America announced 1,200 total layoffs in North Carolina, including 485 in Gaston County.
Curators at the Schiele Museum prepare a behind the scenes display this weekend featuring rare collections of bugs snails and other organisms. Volunteers and staff with doctorates will answer questions and identify items visitors bring in as wooden cases of beetles spiders snails mushrooms and more are shown.
