On the final day before Christmas 1992 shoppers in Gaston County confronted scarce stock as toys sporting goods and winter wear flew off shelves. Wal Mart and Brendle’s managers described conditions with blunt candor noting many items were already gone and shoppers were buying whatever remained.
In Mogadishu amid danger and rain from a tropical storm, U S Marines and other troops decorate cots with improvised Christmas trees, exchange foil wrapped rations as gifts, and hold services. Santa is played by Katherine Creswell and Carol Pirro. A civilian was killed and three injured by a land mine near Bardera.

A legislative panel urged a November vote on allowing betting on horse races in North Carolina and creating a state racing commission in 1994. Supporters project up to 250 million dollars annually and 5,000 jobs, while opponents warn of corruption and gambling outside tracks.
Eddie Black, 20, legally blind and a Charlotte rehab patient who was struck by a car in Raleigh, returns home to Gastonia for Christmas. Doctors by his side, he expects to beat his Feb. 17 hospital release date as his family credits his will to live and prayers for the remarkable recovery.
