Testimony in a federal case in Gastonia last week described efforts by some police officials to unravel a conspiracy to abuse street people from 1987 to 1990. Two sergeants testified about attempts to stop the abuse and the reactions they faced as public attention grew following the October 1990 scandal.
The four day Gastonia police abuse trial left questions about the federal probe, with four officers pleading guilty and two convicted. Sentences come January while supervisors face no charges yet. Probers won’t confirm additional indictments though a lawyer suggests they may implicate higher ups.
