Clinton seeks advice in televised economic conference

President elect Clinton quizzed economists and business leaders at a two day, nationally televised conference in Little Rock. The session mixed seminar and town hall formats with 320 participants from industry labor academia and advocacy groups. Clinton supported a strong but not propped up dollar and urged cautious Chinese policy while pressing for human rights progress. Sen Lloyd Bentsen said China must have an open market for U.S. trade to continue.

Businessman Tidwell released on bond in federal case

Roy Tidwell and co defendant Walter Church were released on $1 million bonds after a federal indictment and four year probe into Tidwell business practices. Both men are under house arrest and electronic monitoring while under federal supervision. Charlene Church named in the case and Tidwell’s wife Carolyn aided in the bond.

Ex-Gaston Police Officers Testify On Street Abuse Scheme

Former Gastonia officer Allen Wright testified in federal court that Eagle team members routinely abused street people since 1987 including slaps, beatings, and demeaning pranks. He described gatherings to brag using the line taking them for a ride on Space Mountain as they targeted Rankin Lake and a post office.

Gaston County officers face civil rights trial panel

A nine man and three woman jury, including two Gaston County ties, was chosen to hear the case of three Gastonia Police officers charged with civil rights violations of street people. Witness Allen Wright described abuses from 1987 to 1990 and quoted, We all told each other to stick to our guns and not admit anything.

Gastonia police chief and officers subpoenaed in trial

Gastonia Police Chief Jack Postell and several current and former officers were subpoenaed to testify this week as trial begins for three officers accused of civil rights violations against street people. Potential government witnesses include former officers McKinney Bass Trull Ramsey and Sgt Terry Jones, along with street people John Black Leonard Carswell and Charles Arthur Davis. Defense witnesses list Postell and other officials amid ongoing controversy since a federal probe and 1990 internal findings.
