County and city clash over Bessemer police funding in Gaston
Gaston County wants Bessemer City to pay up to 1.1 million annually for police protection provided since 1998. The county cites costs and per crime metrics, while city officials led by Mayor Becky Smith argue the figures are inflated. A 90 day termination notice is in place, with negotiations planned and an outside consultant assessing value of the service. Mayor Smith accuses the county of bullying and miscalculation as city manager James Inman pushes back on the assessed costs.
