The NC Welcome Centers run by the state mark a quarter century of service this year. The Kings Mountain center on I 85 North will celebrate Friday with refreshments, entertainment and craft demonstrations as the centers have evolved from fancy rest areas greeting 135,000 people in the past.
Lincoln County and Gaston County were declared disaster areas after a summer of drought. John Blanton, farming 400 acres outside Lincolnton, says drought damaged soybeans, small grains, and beef cattle, forcing some farmers to quit. Relief loans from the federal government become available as farmers face winter uncertainty.
The Agriculture Department requires that all raw or partially cooked meat and poultry sold in the United States after October 15 carry safe handling instructions. The rule follows a West Coast E coli outbreak linked to undercooked hamburgers at a fast food chain, which killed two children and sickened about 300 people, and a related lawsuit settlement. Public officials and parents of a 17 month old victim urged adherence to the label message emphasizing refrigeration, thawing, separation, cleaning, thorough cooking, and prompt refrigeration of leftovers.
President Clinton camps at the White House for an anti crime plan including 55,000 more police and gun control measures. He issued executive orders suspending imports of foreign made assault style handguns and tightening gun dealer regulations while urging Congress to pass the broader package.
The proposal broadens federal death eligibility to about 50 offenses including the killing of federal officers and limits appeals to speed executions. It also calls a four year 100 million police program offering scholarships and training for up to 5000 students willing to commit to police work and conversion of closed bases into boot camps for youth offenders.
Gaston leaders say President Clinton's crime plan, including a halt on foreign assault-style handgun imports and tighter gun sales rules, will bring money for troops and police. Simon Roe, chair of the Drug Crime Task Force, notes 40 new state troopers and potential grants for Gastonia.
Defense Secretary Les Aspin ordered an about face on a Marine Corps policy banning married recruits. Gen. Mundy announced no new marriages after September 1995 and required counseling for those in uniform. The Army Navy and Air Force have no comparable policy.
