Storm rips Gastonia area with outages and fires

A brutal storm with 50 mph winds battered Greater Gaston including Gastonia. A possible tornado was reported near Franklin Boulevard. Lightning struck the communications center causing dispatch delays. Fires broke out citywide, including Rahmann Conveyor on East Franklin. Police rerouted traffic to manage the outages.

Keaton brings Hollywood to Stanley for day of filming

Actress director Diane Keaton shot a cable movie in Stanley with a 70 member crew, featuring about 15 minutes of footage across town. Beau Bridges may join Friday at St Joseph's Church in Mount Holly as Anne McCaffrey notes Stanley’s quaint appeal and a wintery downtown warehouse setting. Nursing home faces new state abuse probe at Royal Crest

The state attorney general and Gaston District Attorney pursue an abuse and neglect case at Royal Crest nursing home. The inquiry, tied to a Gaston County grand jury finding, follows prior fines and county probes and may involve Medicaid patients beyond Horace Keller. Co owner Jim Leach denies knowledge of the basis.

Royal Crest nursing home opens after state finds problems

In June 1989 the 50 bed Autumn field nursing home closes due to serious issues. In July 1989 it reopens as Royal Crest with new management. February 1990 inspections note some deficiencies but grant a full license. January to February 1991 state probes begin after at least one complaint. April 18, 1991 Royal Crest fined 7000 dollars and license suspended for failing to obtain doctor care for five critically ill patients. June 20, 1991 DSS asks Governor Martin to review inspectors’ investigations.

State keeps top rating despite NC budget strains

Standard and Poor's says North Carolina will retain its Triple A bond rating for now. The firm criticizes the 1991-92 budget for limited flexibility amid economic risks and questions long term commitments in education and other areas.
