Belmont man charged in hit-and-run death
Belmont resident Jerry Kent Orrell, 31, turned himself in on a second degree murder charge after a fatal hit-and-run that killed 53 year-old John Wayne Orrell as he crossed Broad Street near a Gastonia QuikTrip. Orrell allegedly drove a 1997 Ford Explorer about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, with a witness placing him at the scene. Police seek the second vehicle driver, possibly a Toyota.
