Greatest American Legion Parade in Kansas City Draws Veterans
In Kansas City on November 1 officials called the parade the greatest marching men spectacle since Lincoln era. The American Legion event opened with elders from Grand Army of the Republic and veterans from Confederate and Spanish forces joining olive drab and navy uniforms. Five Allied leaders reviewed the march including Foch Diaz Jacques Beatty and Pershing. At a reviewing stand on eighteenth street and Grand Avenue Beatty and staff left line to view the march. Convention moved to New Orleans after a session closing with Beatty, Emery pinned the Legion emblem, and Beatty promised to keep it as a family possession. Rear Admiral Hugh Rodman then spoke as the crowd cheered three times for Beatty. The convention vote to host in 1922 favored New Orleans after a close roll call 538 to 612, with California urging a unanimous motion to hold the sessions in mid October for five days. Turkey shoots by Gibson Gun Club, Gallup marksmen, and another event at Gibson ball park are also noted.
