Santa Fe B. Go. To Build New Houses

The Santa Fe railroad will immediately begin construction of six residences on the north side of the Puerco near Gibson Spur. More houses are planned as Gallup faces a housing shortage. Yard and Hichborn of Los Angeles have the carpentry contract. completion aimed for late March. Gallup grows toward city prominence in New Mexico.

Gus Mulholland strikes oil in Ventura California

Gus Mulholland taps a 800 foot well in Ventura County producing 50 barrels a day. Union Oil Co will lease 400 acres, drill more wells, build road and pipe line, and organize a company to manage the land lease. Local business men show interest as a new oil field emerges with indications of larger production to come.

Birthday party honors Jack Young on seventeenth birthday

Mrs. Margaret Young hosted a Wednesday night birthday party for her son Jack aged 17 with dancing and an excellent lunch by Mrs. Young and daughters. Another event Thursday featured Mrs Rollie and Mrs Barton entertaining Methodist Missionary society ladies, highlighting officer installations and a musical program.

Gibson and Faw Company to Open Lumber Yard

The Gibson and Faw Lumber Co will establish yards and shops east of town on Santa Fe land near the Harvey house within eight weeks. The firm, already operating in Colorado New Mexico Texas and Arizona, plans a large lumber stock here and may expand as demand grows. D W Faw visited Gallup this week saying the city will see substantial building and a steady growth with lumber demand for new homes and businesses.

Junior Red Cross Formed In Gallup Schools

The Junior Red Cross was organized in Gallup city schools with a talk on Wilson era aims. Dues are kept for a working fund, 25 cents prepaid if possible, older district schools to join later. Prafe FE Swinney chairs the unit, Mildred Hornbein is secretary-treasurer, and all schoolchildren will be enrolled.

Boys Organize Scrap Iron Club To Aid Uncle Sam

John Thorn and Frank Maple lead two boys in forming a scrap iron club of about a dozen youths. They will collect scrap metal around town, pile it in a vacant lot, and ship it for remelting. The effort aims to support the war effort and may become a standing Junior Red Cross linked group. Also reported: McKinley County shipment of knitted goods to Denver and plans for Atty Hickey to address the Albuquerque teachers association on a twelve month school term financing and benefits. Professors Swinney have long collaborated in state school work.

Record Breaking Attendance For The Auction Block

The year 1917-wide performances set attendance records across North America for Rex Beach's The Auction Block. Boston Post reports it as the biggest attraction, with long box offices lines and crowds awaiting entry. Rex and Empress screenings at 2:30 matinee priced 10 and 25 cents, amid other local promotions and sales notices.

Town Considers Purchase of Electric Light Plant

Over One Hundred Members in Junior Reserve Corps Formed

The Junior Reserve Corps, recently organized by Reeve Sehuder, has over one hundred members enrolled. They meet on school grounds and drill under Recruiting Officer Culver for U S army recruiting. A horse and wagon are for sale, inquire at Ritter's Grocery.

Sheriff settles strike at McGaffey in short order

Sheriff R L B Roberts ended a mill strike at McGaffey last Saturday after deputies met with strikers, who demanded lower store prices and safer conditions. A vote ended the march, with workers promising to return Monday. The county emphasizes timely resolution and protects local mills from disruption.
