Rock Falls at Heaton Mine Cause Fatal Slaughter
In an accident at Heaton mine last Friday at 4 15 p m coal miners Nick Kezele and James Kostinos were killed and seven men injured. The rock slab from the sandstone roof fell as the men rode a car to surface. Foreman warned the track then returned to find the slab and eight men. Rescue crews freed victims rapidly. A new electric fire alarm was tested Wednesday on Mutual Coal company land to gauge sound spread and carrying capacity. Charles L. Brown longtime Gallup justice of the peace died at St Marys hospital after a two year illness paraly sis being the immediate cause. Native of Bavaria aged 67 or 68, he arrived in Gallup over 30 years ago worked as a miner and built valuable real estate on Railroad avenue.
