German forces conduct a large withdrawal along a 200 mile front as Allied pressure mounts. Reports describe units pulling back with armored detachments and evacuated positions. The retreat signals a major shift in the battle line and could affect momentum in ongoing offensives.
American forces push from the Vesle river seize strategic high ground dominating the Aisne valley. Chicago reports say a bomb blast at the Federal building killed four and wounded many, with a man who placed the device believed arrested. Guards from naval stations and Camp Grant kept the scene under siege as authorities, including IWW suspects and anti government activists, faced widespread arrests and searches.
Washington reports prisoners in state prisons federal penitentiaries and jails 18 to 45 will register September 12 under the new man-power law but will not be inducted. Warden reports will go to state adjutant generals yet not included in consolidated state reports. Absentees include jail reformatories and insane asylums with local board assistance for registration.

Selective Service Call issued in Washington for 200 white mechanical draftsmen for limited service mobilized Sept 18 at Camp Meade to join the ordnance corps.
