Captain Samuel Ross Varando of Louisiana returned to duty after a miraculous five day no man’s land ordeal near Verdun. Found half buried by a shell, he lay unconscious with no injuries, though starved and exposed. Enemies believed him dead as comrades carried him to a dressing station for treatment.
Michigan City reports five council members held a secret session and ousted enemy alien August Reich who first filed citizenship papers in 1893. Mayor Miller and four other members did not participate. Reich plans to appeal to the courts.
Washington reports the Allied chiefs insist on no respite until Germany surrenders unconditionally or resumes the war. Officials outline pressure for a complete German fleet surrender and Rhine occupation, while Vienna’s note to Lansing signals Austria-Hungary s flux and looming disintegration amid Bolshevik influence and Slavic rejection of Magyars.

Lieut Maurice F Maxwell of New Hope Pennsylvania was killed in Houston when his plane struck a tree during landing. A 1906 University of Pennsylvania graduate, Maxwell was an architect in Washington DC before he joined the military.
