Epidemic Relief Efforts Prompt Town Meeting
The town organizes aid for ailing families as illness spreads, with a district nurse deemed indispensable. Residents donate food and funds to sustain full-time nursing in Portland, while authorities urge collective support and orderly conduct during relief deliveries.
Red Cross Christmas Packages and District Nurse Appeal
The War Department will allow service members to receive a home Christmas package mailed to a nearest relative. Containers must be 4 by 9 by 11 inches, under three pounds, with dates: packages accepted for Portland boys and other districts, inspection, seals, and safe forwarding. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A district nurse appeal notes Portland’s lag in civilian relief, urging canvassing and full-town support for a full-time nurse despite limited local funds.
