Engineers Attack Hill No 299 Near Cunel During Verdun Fight
U S engineers fight with the American army north west of Verdun on October 18. They stormed Hill No 299, driving Germans from the crest and northern slopes after climbing the slope. It was the largest engineer engagement with the all engineer unit. They later consolidated positions near Bois Chauviensy and rounded up German prisoners in Bois Chatillon. Strong German resistance in Grand Pre forced slight ground loss at Bois de Loges. Washington reports a Syracuse cost of living study to begin October 19.
