Town’s muted reaction to armistice rumor amid confusion
A town, like the nation, briefly believed an armistice with Germany had ended the war. Church bells rang, whistles blew, and plans for a large celebration were proposed, but officials soon questioned the report’s accuracy. Washington confirmation dampened local enthusiasm and celebrations were subdued.
