St Johns Service Flag Dedication Honors War Heroes

A Memorial Day service at St John’s parish dedicates the service flag honoring the parishioners who went to fight in the war. The event features a procession by St Sebastian band and Be Italia, speeches by Mayor McDowell and Rev. Ernest Wilson, and a benediction amid readings on patriotism, sacrifice, and the righteous cause. The 8x12 foot flag lists stars for over 160 local soldiers including two families with multiple members serving.

Rolling Crutches for the Crippled in Medical Bulletin

A Journal of the American Medical Association article reviews rolling crutches as a major improvement over traditional models. The device adds a double flanged iron arc at the crutch base to keep the shoulder motion horizontal, enabling longer steps, steadier forward progress, and better support, while noting downsides such as weight cost and crowding.

The Battery F Liar

The Battery F liar was at large again this week and the old stories of routs in France circulated briefly. The war department reports, issued daily, are the only reliable casualty updates received by cable, with names reaching relatives hours later. There may be evidence someday to send the Battery Fryar to a place where he might learn useful industry.
