An epochal meeting of the Might Chamber of Commerce voted to champion Middletown recreation facilities including playgrounds sports fields and centers. Cyrus Stimpson urged unity for city welfare linking commerce to social life and stressing civic leadership through a strong chamber of commerce with community projects and parks.
Paris May 23 President Wilson said it is only possible to await developments after German cabinet reports that Teutonic envoys would not sign the peace treaty. Berlin expected to accept the terms after economic concessions and reparations clause changes, which are not basic. Count von Brockdorff-Rantzau met with German officials at Spa to determine the final attitude, while the Big Four discussed Turkey and Austrian questions and the Saar Valley terms. Austria is seen as able to pay indemnity, with plans to forfeit shipping. armament limits also under review.
Senator Phelan of California offers a bill in the Senate to repeal provisions of the food control act prohibiting beer and light wines. Also reports Putnam Mills raises wages effective June 1 by about 15 percent aligning with Massachusetts increases. affected mills and workers totals include Putnam Manufacturing Co. 300, Nightingale-Morse 400, Manhasset 650, Grosvernordale 1500.
At an adjourned Co. C, 102nd Infantry meeting last night the unit voted not to parade as a unit on Memorial Day if William J. Atwell remains marshal, but will join under any other named by the general committee. The full parade committee, including Common Council, Chamber of Commerce and War Bureau members, will meet tonight at 7:30 at the Chamber offices to decide the course. The debate followed Harry McCutcheon Jr.’s unlit headlights arrest on Main Street, with Officer Stanley Schilling saying Atwell ordered the arrest. Both sides dispute who knew the owner’s identity. The soldiers seem to back the policeman, and tonight’s committee action is awaited.
New York World poll shows a large majority of congressmen oppose repealing war time prohibition. Senate: 18 for, 30 against, 32 non committal, 16 absent. House: 104 for, 199 against, 108 non committal, 18 absent. Two to one against repeal overall.
Washington May 23 opponents blocked efforts to speed action on the constitutional amendment granting woman suffrage. Senator Johnson of California asked to have the resolution passed by the house sent to the calendar without committee consideration. Senator Hud of Alabama objected and demanded committee referral. Senator Jones of New Mexico argued there is no committee to send the resolution to.
The NC-4 mission to Lisbon is postponed due to rough seas and heavy wind. Admiral Jackson's 5 am dispatch confirms Read cannot depart Ponta Delgada today for the fourth leg. A prior note cited unfavorable weather with high seas and wind, delaying the flight for at least 12 hours.
In Washington on May 23 the Senate began a drive to boost U S aeronautics by creating a Senate committee on aeronautics with a proposed 12 members seven Republicans and five Democrats. The panel would oversee all aeronautics legislation and power over the army air service naval aviation marine corps flying corps and aerial mail service and could shape creation of an aircraft board similar to Britain s air ministry. Support crosses party lines amid pride in the NC 4 trans Atlantic flight while war department opposition and presidential resistance loom.
Barre Vermont May 23 Irving B Smith arrested in Leominster Massachusetts as a material witness in the Broadwell murder case. He is alleged to have been at the home of Mrs Isabelle J Parker on the night Mrs Henry B Broadwell was murdered. Parker and her lodger George A Long are now in custody.
A gathering for the 84 Middletown soldiers who have served overseas is planned for tomorrow night at 8 at an announced location. Veterans who have overseas service are invited to attend.
Old Saybrook real estate agent Charles S. Gates sues George W. Cadwell of East Hartford for a 5 percent commission on a 1900 sale. An Old Saybrook justice ruled Gates due $95, Cadwell appeals to the superior court. Separate suits involve mortgage foreclosures and other claims in Killingworth and Haddam.
Bald Jack Rose, famed former New York gambler turned reformer, will address a Wesleyan College rally at the Phi Nu Theta House this Saturday night on Why Gambling Does Not Pay. Rose had canceled a prior YMCA engagement due to illness but is expected to draw large audiences nationwide.
