German planes attacked Paris in a two hour raid but were driven back by French high-angle guns and defensive fire. Early reports say three killed and several wounded, with some bombers reaching outskirts but none hitting the capital itself. One enemy aircraft was shot down north of Paris.
A London dispatch reports Japan and China, under a new treaty, ready to intervene in Siberia when the allies desire action. The International News Service dispatch notes the pact does not indicate immediate intervention and cites a Paris cablegram confirming the treaty.
Geneva dispatch to the Daily Express describes extensive damage to Cologne from a recent air raid. Bombs hit the town hall barracks and the railway station while airmen avoided the cathedral. many recruits were killed.
Hartford May 22 A committee of the Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association drafted resolutions urging Senators Frank B Brande and George P McLean to support the woman suffrage amendment to the United States constitution.
Rome reports the destruction of nine Austro German aeroplanes on the Italian front. Eight were brought down by Italian and British airmen. The ninth was shot down in flames by anti aircraft cannon.
A fire in Revere Massachusetts destroyed a wooden storage building a stable two three decker houses and a cottage in Washington Square early today. The loss is estimated at fifty thousand dollars. William J Bridgett of Wallingford Connecticut died at his home in the town.
London reports night raids by British forces across the front with prisoners taken from multiple sectors. In the Arras area British troops entered German trenches and captured 14 prisoners and a machine gun, while other parties seized prisoners near Locon Nieppe Forest Meteren and north of the Ypres Comines canal. A raid north of Albert was repulsed as German artillery and gas shelling intensified east of Nieppe Forest and north of Bethune.
London dispatch reports John Dillon, Irish nationalist leader, says MPs will return to London with uncertain date and condemns Sinn Fein tactics. He doubts government will push a home rule bill and criticizes arms use. Additional Sinn Fein arrests anticipated. Count Plunket moved to England. proclamations banning Sinn Fein meetings covered by manifestos. sympathizers go into hiding.
Lieutenant William H. Taylor of New York shot down a German two-seater twelve kilometres inside enemy lines after a fierce air battle near the Toul front. He fired 450 rounds and observed an incendiary burst that brought the German craft down. Captain Peterson of Homesale, Pa., also forced a German plane down near Chateau Salins after crossing the Allied line toward Nancy.
Reports from Paris dated May 22 describe a pitched battle in Moscow between thieves and police with police seeming powerless. The dispatch notes ten thousand robberies and hold-ups in Moscow over recent months and mentions a reported pact between Bolshevik soviets and Germany to keep the Caucasus within the Russian federation as Red Guards advance against Caucasian forces.
London reports four Italian naval men who breached Pola harbor and sank an Austro Hungarian battleship of the Viribus Unitis type were captured. Commander Pellegrini and three crew advanced alone into Pola, two explosions followed by a luminous signal, then the motor boat sank to avoid capture.
Rome reports Italian war office says positions at Caposile along the lower Piave have been extended and artillery activity increased. A coup de main against Monte Spinoda nearly wiped out the garrison and reinforcements of two officers and 52 men. An enemy attack near Sotto Castello Sassarosso was repulsed and a thrust toward Fener yielded prisoners.
London May 22 Field Marshal Haig sent congratulations to Australian forces on the northern Picardy front for capturing Ville-Sur-Ancre near Morlan court three miles south of Albert in a brilliant storm assault on Sunday. Emperor Charles in Constantinople May 22 arrived with Empress Zita. Vienna reports his visit aims to unite Bulgaria and Turkey with the central empires.
London reports the Russian dowager empress Maria Feodorovna, held prisoner in Germany after the Romanoff overthrow, has been allowed to travel to Denmark. She is a daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, and was in Petrograd when the revolution occurred.
Paris reports aviation is the allies' chief battle arm. The press notes Painleve's appeal for thousands of partly trained aviators and planes to France. It asserts airmen, like cavalry, can win when attacking in numbers and helped save the allied armies in the German offensive.
Official communique from May 21 notes reconnaissance combats in the Lorraine sector with captured prisoners. It also reports activity on both sides in the core sector and in nearby areas as Allied and opposing forces engaged.
