Fifteen lines reported for abandonment by the Connecticut Company draw heated opposition in Hartford. At the May meeting the Common Council considered raising the Director of Public Works salary from 2500 to 3000 but withdrew the motion and sent it to the finance committee. The council rejected a petition to extend a two inch water main from South Main Street to Glynn Avenue. Major items included plans to welcome home returning soldiers and the opening of the new post office building, with other reports on meter reader identification and Catherine street line designations.
May 6 reports from Lawrence Massachusetts recount two alleged radical textile workers Anthony Capardi and Samuel Klienan claiming masked assailants beat them and dumped them on roadways after midnight. State would provide equipment and instructors if the town supplies building and facilities. In Hartford on May 6 the Connecticut House passed the state boxing bill with eight round bouts and eight ounce gloves under a three member commission. Mrs Harold M Meech driving from Hartford yesterday afternoon experienced a rear wheel come off near Cromwell plains around 6 o clock. The nut had dropped earlier causing the condition and she brought the car to a stop.
The Middletown booklet committee of the Chamber of Commerce met to plan two booklets describing the city’s beauty and advantages. Roy B. Chamberlain was elected editor in chief, with committees led by Oscar Kuhns for aesthetics and others for manufacturing, education, mercantile, banking, churches, transportation, charity, housing, labor, public conveniences, agriculture, fraternal life, and health. Richard H. Bunce will answer “Why Middletown” as part of the effort.
Judge Reed awarded Joseph Cannata $437 in the Essex superior court after a two day trial against Francesco Tuccio and his wife for work and labor on a Center street house. Cannata was represented by Leonard O. Ryan. defendants by Gustaf B. Carlson and B E Spencer. In a separate matter Koritkoski sued Wladyslaw Niemic for $2000 over alleged slander. trial to the court, two days, with Coulter and Carlson for plaintiff and Burke for defendant.
Four men seen near a south end house with a woman matching Mrs Henry Broadwell. Her nearly naked body was found in the streets Sunday morning. Police consider the possibility that the murder occurred at that house and the body was brought to the scene. A witness claims to have seen Mrs Broadwell the night before. Police theory links white slaver rings to the crime.
A cablegram to the Lithuanian national council from Paris reports Polish troops failed to capture Vilna and that the town remains in Bolshevik hands. The Lithuanian government protested the invasion to the peace conference, and the Big Five ordered action by Poles and Lithuanians.
In Columbus Ohio a fierce blaze at 75 12 West Broad Street trapped occupants in an elevator shaft turning the six story building into a furnace. Ten bodies were found and ten others were hospitalized with serious burns. The blaze began from a gas jet in a second floor bathroom and firefighters faced near impossibility in reaching the flames. A dramatic rescue saw a bystander risk a blanket net to save an infant. Authorities fear the death toll may reach fifteen as they continue to pull bodies from the ruins.
Middletown will not get a U S Navy ship named for the city despite leading the fourth Liberty Loan drive. Secretary J Vincent Dempsey of the Chamber of Commerce explains the honor hinges on subscription percentages, not speed. Hartford New Britain Waterbury and New Haven outranked Middletown in percentage, so ships are named for those cities instead. Information came after correspondence with the U S Treasury Department and the New England committee.
May 6. Nearly 5 000 officers and men of the 77th division arrived home today aboard the steamship President Grant a few hours too late to take part in the division parade up Fifth avenue. The Grant carried the 304th machine gun battalion 304th and 306th field artillery 302nd train headquarters 02nd ammunition train 302nd sanitary train 302nd supply train 77th division quartermaster's rail head detachment and a casual company.
Morris Blamer of this city filed a notice of intention to apply for admission as a member of the Bar of the State of Connecticut and desires to be examined at New Haven in June of this year. There will be further proceedings as required.
May 6 dispatches from Paris and Milan report Italy pushing for minimal concessions on Fiume and other coastland while officials discuss the League of Nations framework. Wilson and Clemenceau push for plenary talks. Italy seeks favorable borders and international guarantees amid secret peace committee sessions.
