Paris March 20 two drafts of a covenant amendment to clear up claims that signing the League of Nations would surrender the Monroe Doctrine have been submitted to President Wilson Col House and Lord Robert Cecil but both were rejected. The decision avoided opening a line for the league to interfere in domestic policy. the matter remains under consideration though no clear agreement is expected. A League subcommittee headed by Cecil and House met neutrals, while the full committee plans meetings to craft a new agreement. House hopes the new covenant will be approved by the 19 delegates from 14 powers next Thursday as debates continue on whether to approve separately or together with the treaty. No supreme allied council meeting was held today but a session is planned tomorrow.
Washington March 20 The Census Bureau is receiving applications for about 490 supervisor posts to oversee 90 000 enumerators in house to house canvassing. Supervisors will be chosen by the secretary of commerce on the director of the census recommendation after tests and personal inquiries. Selection favors candidates with executive administrative statistical or accounting experience. Duties run about a year from July 1 1919 with pay of 1500 plus one dollar per 1000 of population enumerated. clerk hire and expenses are government funded.
Stamford police and New York state police examined a bloodstained unmarked car found in White Plains tied to a gang of New Jersey car thieves suspected in a Tuesday dawn shooting that wounded Motorcycle Policeman Hugh Grogan and damaged Rye New York and Greenwich Connecticut. The investigation follows information from a Stamford detective who connected the case to the New Jersey gang.
The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of New York will donate an hour's pay weekly to Lawrence textile workers until their dispute ends. George E. Roewer of Boston arrived as treasurer of the defense committee formed by Boston social workers to assist the Lawrence strike.

Greenwich March 20 burglars struck two neighboring houses on Old Church road. The home of Mrs C M Hyde daughter of soap magnate B T Babbitt and The Chimneys home of Mr and Mrs Allen B Forbes were raided while the owners were away. A large amount of silverware and other items were stolen. Hyde’s household staff prepared an inventory for the insurance company but declined to hand it to police.
