At Middletown's largest town meeting, a memorial bridge and boulevard for local soldiers was referred to a five member citizen commission after the town sought legislative permission to bond 155000 for the project. A March 25 adjourned meeting will consider the commission report and whether to authorize the expenditure.
New York reports the Iowan docked at Hoboken carrying the 314th and 311th trench mortar batteries from Iowa and Texas, with 1,922 soldiers under Major Walter E. Palmer. The 101st trench mortar battery moved to Camp Merritt, while Corporal John L. Casey of Fairfield, Conn. arrives home wearing the Croix de Guerre and DSC for action at Chateau Thierry, Toul, St Mihiel and Verdun. Six more transports follow. Captain Phillip Roosevelt, cousin of the late ex president, aboard the Suriname, earns the Croix de Guerre with palm.
Washington March 12 The transports Princess Matoika Rijndam Haverford Zacapa and Polar Land have sailed from France to the United States carrying about 8 700 troops. Arrivals are slated for Newport News Philadelphia New York and other ports with outfits including the 37th Engineers 306th trench mortar battery and the 138th field artillery among others and convalescent detachments.
New York March 12 The case of Edith Mortimer a Long Island society girl charged with manslaughter for the October killing of Nathan Wasserberger in Flushing is near an end as the Queens county supreme court trial resumes this afternoon. Defense counsel prepared to sum up and a brief jury charge is expected after the district attorney presents the states case.
Displeased veterans picketed the Dominion Government Land Settlement Board office in Winnipeg to protest the failure to waive the ten percent cash payment for soldiers applying for land. The action aimed to discourage further applications by returned servicemen.

New York March 12 all trans Atlantic liners and government transports in this port are tied up today as 2500 coal barges and tug boat workers strike. Berwynd White Co handles 95 percent of local coal shipments. Union leaders demand government commandeering of all company barges and tugboats to end the walkout.
Disturbances in Cairo, Egypt, were triggered by German propaganda per state department advices received this afternoon. Orders were suppressed after several agitators were arrested, but clashes between troops and civilians caused fatalities.
Hartford March 12 The senate rejected a bill to move jailed women to the state farm due to no appropriation. Judiciary favored a measure to require all superior and supreme court judges to retire as state referees at age 70 on half salary, with exceptions for appointees after July 1, 1919 who have not served ten years. Committees favored changes at Middletown’s Connecticut Hospital for the Insane trustees and for a Polish independence memorial. Other actions included a favorable report on a savings banks investments law, and senate moves on constitutional amendments, river improvement, and a re codification vote. The house amended the Knights of Columbus charter, approved playgrounds in Stamford, tramway issues, and a Yale anatomy program for unclaimed bodies. Bridgeport bond and dog registration measures passed, while a dog license fee hike failed. Charles J. Martin was elected deputy judge of Orange town court.

In New York on March 12 police disclosed burglars stole $26,000 in cash from the Cosmopolitan Bank in the Bronx after bypassing a small safe holding $130,000. The intruders rifled the vault and looted a larger safe as well.

Newark New Jersey March 12 policemen cooled the initial riot from a 4000 worker strike affecting Public Service Railway lines across 141 towns. A Mount Prospect car was halted as strikers hissed crew members and the crowd dispersed with troops nearby. Jitneys and autos eased congestion while thousands walked to work. Union leaders demand union recognition and arbitration for other issues, company rejects talks.
Big Blizzard Anniversary in Newdraven on March 12 marks the historic end of severe winter weather. The era’s mild past season saw only 46 inches of snow all winter and snow vanish quickly along the Connecticut shore. In Chicago on March 12 a two hour clash involving about 250 police and civilians and suspect George Ondek left two patrolmen Dennis Keating and James Wall and a civilian George Podorsky wounded. Ondek fired on officers as they entered his home to arrest him on cruelty charges and then barricaded himself, exchanging hundreds of shots with responders before the final outcome remained unclear.
Mysterious 12 inch high chalk writings appeared today on sidewalks in front of and behind City Hall and other city areas urging Irish freedom. Police suspect an ambient Sinn Fein activist, with lines such as My blood feels the spirit of liberty and I appeal to you to give your liberty to ours. Similar notices were found at Broadway and Chambers Street and in Washington Heights and elsewhere.
Washington March 12 announced this afternoon at the White House executive offices that former Representative Martin A Morrison of Indiana and George R Wales of Middlebury Vermont were appointed as members of the United States civil service commission. They succeed Commissioners John A McIlhaney and Herman W Crafen respectively. Wales has served with the commission since 1891.
A dispatch to the state department reports that Ussuri Cossacks voted to recognize the Omsk government in Moscow on March 12. The move follows a wartime realignment and signals support for the anti Bolshevik authorities amid the Russian civil conflict.
