Allies Press Forward as German Hold on Soissons Wanes
Franco American forces press their advance along a 20 mile front from north of the Ourcq to the Vesle, recapturing Champroisy Anthe nay and Alizy et Velaine while forcing across the Ourcq. They report German reinforcements massing between Soissons and Rheims and burning villages between Soissons and Bazoches as they retreat toward the Vesle.

Americans Active in Air Fighting Over the Marne
With the American army at the Marne, July 28 night Lieut. Alexander McLanahan of Philadelphia and Lieut. Edward Buford of Nashville engaged two German double seaters over Fere-en-Tardenois and one German machine is believed shot down. Lieut. William P. Erwin and Lieut. Byrne Boucom survived a 17-plane attack on an observation mission after their aircraft was riddled with bullets. Erwin’s observer was shot dead in mid air on his first flight. Lieut. James Messner of Brooklyn was put in command of a squadron and credited with four downed Germans, with a fifth shared. Lieut. Douglass Campbell of California, credited with seven downed Germans, will return to the U.S. to help organize training for pilots. Eddie Rickenbacker of Columbus has rejoined his squadron after an ear abscess.

Across the Aisne Marne front German reinforcements were rushed to the line from the Luneville sector and thrown into the fight as Allied forces advanced. American troops and French units pressed the retreat with heavy artillery support and rapid advances near Fresnes, La Voliet, and Fere en Tardenois, drawing in reserves from multiple zones to stem the pursuit.
