From Berlin reports show Spartacists gaining control of Mulheim and Oberhausen as disorder fears rise. Amster dateline notes a push to defend revolutionary order while Entente leaders in Munich warn of extreme measures if Berlin unrest continues.
Troops loyal to the government entered Berlin from Potsdam and drove back Spartacides. Fighting centered at Wolff bureau and state printing offices, with four loyal soldiers killed. Government reinforcements move in, rail traffic resumes by evening. Vorwaerts and Allgemeine Zeitung return as loyal papers amid negotiations with Spartacides.
Berlin reports say government troops are being rushed to reinforce the garrison as Chancellor Ebert prepares to declare Berlin under a state of siege. In Berlin official circles doubt the German victory claim against the Bolshevik movement. Officials say measures to crush the terrorists may extend at least a fortnight as fronts along the Berlin frontier show firing, with reports that German authorities have moved to suppress the Spartacists.
Basle Jan 9. In Berlin today the Chancellor declared that Germany must act in the fight it has been forced into. He said Spartacists demanded control of the chancellery and abused the whites by opening fire after being repulsed, insisting intervention is necessary to restore order.
London reports from December 10 detail Vorwaerts figures stating births fell by over 23 000 and deaths rose by more than 14 000 in Berlin across 1913 to 1917. The five year table lists 1913 to 1917 birth and death totals amid wartime conditions. The data underscored demographic strain during the conflict.

Major General J Franklin Bell, commander of the Department of the East, died of heart disease at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He had been admitted three days earlier for observation and was 63 years old. A West Point graduate from the class of 1878, Bell hailed from Shelbyville Kentucky.

Arthur O Christiansen a wealthy mining engineer from Dover New Jersey took his seven year old son Minot from a Groton Massachusetts school chased by the mother. After a confrontation with police in Ayer both agreed to restore the boy to the mother. He said custody was split with two weeks in January and July.
