Quincy mass December 27 more than four thousand mechanics at the Victory plant of Bethlehem Steel Squantum lodge boiler maker No 115 held a mass meeting and voted to support workers denied work for not meeting the new 7 am opening time. Similar meetings were urged at other sections and leaders say over four thousand organized mechanics stand ready to respond to union actions.
Paris reports George Creel, head of the U S government committee on public information, has severed ties with the government and will return to the United States at once. He declares his work finished, with speculation that he hoped to serve as a foreign secretary to President Wilson during the peace conferences.
New Haven December 27 The Connecticut Suffrage association has named Miss Mary Elisabeth Hutt of Brooklyn as executive secretary. She joins from the National War Savings committee and will oversee field and office supervision, while legislative work remains under another officer.
Vincent Astor, who turned his yacht over to the government and enlisted, will command yeoman guards at the palace of Versailles during the peace conference. Lawrence J. Minton of Baltimore, stationed at Rochefort, says Astor was chosen to lead a 12 man unit.
Peter Mirabel aged 14 died after reentering a fire swept New York apartment to save his Christmas gifts. His parents escaped with several women and children rescued by soldiers and sailors at a holiday celebration nearby.
A masked robber armed with a revolver and rope attempted a bank of Montreal messenger robbery at Queen and Yonge streets. The messenger fought back, the bandit fled through busy streets, and was captured by traffic constables. He claimed the name William Smith and said he lived in Massachusetts.
New Haven December 27 The forces officially announced yesterday include the Thirty-ninth base hospital company organized here by Yale men with Dr. Flint of the Yale medical school as leader. The unit consists almost entirely of Yale men.
London reports that Great Britain France Russia America and Austria-Hungary lost 5,796,504 lives in the war. The Evening Standard cites a French chamber of deputies estimate of 4,071,000 French dead as the basis for the total.
An 18 year old youth in a Washington police cell admitted killing 68 year old Elizabeth Beckwith at her farm near Colesville Maryland after she demanded marriage. He said she attempted to poison him with iodine, he escaped, shaved in the kitchen, then fled before being recaptured.
Detectives tracing a Monday diamond theft of over $100000 from M Kalson, a Chicago diamond broker, say they have exposed a city based crime syndicate with operatives in Pittsburg Philadelphia New York and other cities. Between 25 and 30 suspects were rounded up, with claims the boss will be identified soon.
In White Plains New York on December 27 a separation suit involving a couple married over 15 years and both over 60 was decided for the husband by Justice Tompkins. The case, brought by Mrs Babette Kruezweiser 60 of Peekskill against her husband Frederick 65, charged the husband drove her from their home and that she slept in an outbuilding while his two daughters testified to support a counter charge of wife cruelty.
