More than 5,000 American soldiers and marines arrived in New York aboard the Mauretania and the Northern Pacific, with 3,999 troops and 1,100 wounded, plus 400 sailors. Alexander Kerensky denounces Allied actions as a betrayal of Russian democracy. He laments Russia’s sacrifices, protests entente plans to tear Bessarabia from Russia for Romania, and questions the Wilson 14 points’ implementation as pivotal to Russia’s peace conference chances.
Washington December 2 All navy officers below the rank of rear admiral who have had two and a half years of continuous land duty will be ordered to sea duty as soon as practicable Secretary of the Navy Daniels announced. He said the prewar rule tying two years land duty to sea service remains in effect and he has asked the Bureau of Navigation to report the names of officers subject to the order.
London reports an American naval estimate noting 256 submarine actions by U.S. craft on European waters. Depth bombs were dropped in several cases with no sighting of hostile vessels. Officials say the figure reflects credible engagements and ongoing anti submarine operations.
Bridgeport reports the death of John, prince of the gypsy king’s family in the United States, at Bridgeport Hospital from pneumonia aged 24 born in Russia. A Princeton graduate, he leaves a wife and one child. Gypsies nationwide gather for the funeral near the camp.
