British push to drive Hindenburg Line near Arras

By Bert Ford British troops sweeping east of Arras have captured parts of the Hindenburg Line and advanced more than 40 miles along the front from Feuchy to Lihons. Reports from London place Fampoux and Feuchy as northern battle points. Allied forces press on amid heavy artillery near Bapaume as prisoners from various German divisions, including the Eighty third and Third Naval Division, are captured. The Seventeenth British division is praised for its breakthrough and rescue of comrades cut off at Louvain.

Milford Jitney Driver Fined After Sensational Joy Ride

Milford, Aug 26 William Moscovitz a Bridgeport jitney driver was fined 50 and costs on six counts of driving while intoxicated. Bruce of Bridgeport was fined 25 and costs for breach of peace. Clifford Cramer of Bridgeport saw charges dropped by Judge George A Smith. The chase ended when Moscovitzs car left the road and overturned, pinning two women Miss Jane Dent of Bridgeport and Miss Sophie Sabinski of Stratford under the wreck.

Fire Wipes Out Block in Canton Ohio Blaze

A massive Canton blaze on East Second Street and nearby blocks caused an estimated 1.5 million dollars in damage. Firefighters from Canton, Massillon, and nearby districts battled flames until about 9:30 p.m. A fireman was seriously injured, a building collapsed, and two firefighters were overcome during efforts to contain the fire. Origin remains unknown as conditions worsened just before nightfall.

Built Their Own Dugouts Lieutenant Tells How Lives Were Saved

Lieutenant S Meredith Langstaff of Brooklyn commanded a company in the Aisne Vesle front skirmish near Chateau Du Dieble. He credited self-dug bomb proofs for saving lives after German forces attacked. A Austrian cook abandoned his wagon to fight, keeping coffee boiling for the men. Langstaff returns to the U S as an instructor.

Rabid Pig Attacks Hamden Woman in Hamden

Aug. 26 New Haven reports a rabid pig attacked Mrs. Miles Smith of Wallingford road in Mamden. Dr. George H. Joslin treated the victim. Hamden Dog Warden James OConnell was notified of a rabid-acting dog at Spring Blew Manor owned by Richard Williams. The dog was seized and confined while Vet J. W. Nolte prepares to examine it to confirm the illness.

Peace Speech Coming From German Chancellor

London reports an Exchange Telegraph dispatch quoting the Berlin Germania that the imperial chancellor will deliver an important speech on the reconvening of the reichstag within a few days. The Germania says the speech will cover foreign political questions.

Conference on U-boat warfare in Spain outlined

Madrid reports a high level meeting between Germany and Spain on U-boat policy. The German ambassador pressed against replacing sunken Spanish ships with interned German ones and vowed Germany would keep submarine warfare. Negotiations aim to ease Spain’s trade woes while preserving opposing actions against Kaiser's foes. Spain questions neutrality as German note promises non torpedoing requisitioned Spanish ships, with cautions on future measures. Germany paid 650,000 pesetas to a Spaniard family for a sinking incident.

Five Women Arrested in Bridgeport Raid by Federal Authorities

Five Bridgeport women named McGregor Coonredt Furness Brooks and Greenberg were arrested in Bridgeport late Saturday night and brought to Hartford. Deputy Marshal Kelleher led the raid aimed at cleaning up the area within ten miles of the Black Rock naval base. After a preliminary hearing they were sent to await a grand jury in New Haven when the U S district court opens September 24.

Four in Row One Killed in Forestville Brawl

In Bristol on August 26 a Forestville brawl involving four men left Mike Lagoni dead and Stephen Minurski wounded. Guiseppi Christofaro and Minurski are held without bail as police seek Charles Drunvik, the fourth participant. Christofaro said Lagoni was killed by Drunvik who struck with a heavy stone. All four men reside in East Bristol.
